LUTA: The Voice of Commentary, Culture and Calypso

Today, the calypso fraternity celebrates the birthday of former Calypso Monarch Morel Peters, better known to the nation as LUTA, one of the artform’s most respected social commentators and enduring voices.

LUTA entered the calypso arena in 1972 and steadily built a reputation as a composer and performer who never strayed far from the realities of the people. Across decades of competition and tent performances, his music became known for sharp political analysis, cultural reflection, and fearless commentary on national issues.

In 1994, he made history when he shared the Calypso Monarch title with De Lamo through the songs Good Driving and Licensed Firearm, creating the first joint winners in the history of the competition. He would return to the summit again in 2006 with Kaiso Kaiso and Check the Foundation, reaffirming his place among calypso’s elite voices.

Over the years, LUTA delivered a catalogue of memorable compositions including Democracy, Mr. Government, Productivity, Why We Lose, T&T I Love You, Panorama Without Kitch, and How Free Are We. His body of work reflects a songwriter deeply connected to national conversation and the preservation of calypso tradition.
