Karega Mandela: Celebrating a Rapso Soldier

Today, we celebrates the birthday of Karega Mandela, one of the enduring voices of Trinidad and Tobago’s Rapso movement and an artiste whose career has been rooted in rhythm, culture and social consciousness.

Born Neil Charles in Blanchisseuse, Mandela’s journey in performance began while he was still at school, where he developed his skills as a drummer, singer and dancer before eventually becoming involved in Trinidad’s growing sound-system and cultural movement. After moving to Port of Spain, his path crossed with Brother Resistance and the legendary Network Rapso Riddum Band, placing him at the heart of a movement that helped establish Rapso as a distinctive Trinidad and Tobago musical expression.

As part of Network, Karega Mandela helped carry Rapso beyond the stage and into communities and audiences internationally. The music combined spoken-word delivery, African-rooted rhythms, calypso tradition and social commentary, giving artistes a powerful platform to speak about identity, history, culture and the realities of Caribbean life.

Known affectionately as “The Rapso Soldier,” Mandela has remained connected to the art form for decades. In 2025, his contribution was formally recognised at the Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village, where he was honoured for his impact on Rapso, cultural expression and social consciousness.

On his birthday, we salute Karega Mandela for helping to preserve and advance one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most important modern musical traditions.
