Today, we celebrate a giant of Caribbean music, culture, wit, and storytelling: Slinger Francisco, The Mighty Sparrow, the undisputed Calypso King of the World.

Born on July 9, 1935, in Grand Roy, Grenada, and raised in Trinidad, Sparrow’s voice became one of the most important sounds in Caribbean history. From the moment he shook the calypso world with “Jean and Dinah” in 1956, he changed the standard for what a calypsonian could be. He was not just a singer. He was a commentator, comedian, historian, rebel, romantic, philosopher, and entertainer all in one.

Across generations, Sparrow gave us songs that made people laugh, dance, think, argue, and remember. His sharp lyrics, fearless delivery, and unmatched stage presence helped take calypso beyond the tent and into the wider world. With eight Road March titles, eight Calypso Monarch crowns, two King of Kings titles, and national and international honours including the ORTT, OBE, and Order of the Caribbean Community, his legacy is carved deeply into Caribbean identity.

Today, as Sparrow celebrates 91, his music continues to live in homes, archives, playlists, radio rotations, and the memories of fans across the Caribbean diaspora. His more recent releases, including Fyaah and Fury and Live at 85!, remind us that Sparrow’s spirit never truly left the stage. The Birdie still soars, not only through performance, but through influence.
