Winston “Gypsy” Peters

Today, 20th October, TUCO celebrates Winston “Gypsy” Peters on his 74th birthday, recognising a career filled with memorable music, sharp social commentary and the quick wit that has made him a formidable extempo performer.

Born in Mayaro, Gypsy has given audiences much to sing, laugh and think about. “Sinking Ship” remains one of his best-known calypsos, while “Little Black Boy”, with its powerful message about education and the future of young people, helped earn him the National Calypso Monarch title in 1997.

In the extempo arena, his command of rhyme, humour and picong has brought him repeated championship success. Thinking on his feet and answering a challenge in song, Gypsy has shown just how entertaining and demanding this artform can be.

Across more than five decades, his performances have connected generations of calypso lovers, and he remains an active presence on the stage.

TUCO extends warm birthday wishes to Gypsy, with appreciation for the music, the laughter and his contribution to our cultural heritage. Happy birthday!
