The Hendricksons

Calypso has always been shaped by individuals, but across generations, it has also been carried by families. Within the calypso fraternity, these legacies quietly sustain the artform through everyday exposure, shared experience, and continuity over time. Long before the stage, the tent, or competition, calypso is often introduced at home through observation, participation, and constant presence.

In families like the Hendricksons, that process is easy to trace. Anthony Hendrickson, known as All Rounder, entered the calypso space in 1967 after encouragement from Lord Kitchener. He went on to build a career across multiple tents and competitions, with a catalogue that includes The Talking Baby and Blacks Ability, reflecting both humour and social commentary.

That environment extended directly to his daughters, Dianne “Lady Wonder” Hendrickson and Shirlane Hendrickson. Lady Wonder developed her own voice through socially conscious calypsos, including Do So Doh Like So, while Shirlane, who began performing at age six, went on to become a four-time Calypso Queen.

Duane and Ta’zyah O’Connor

A similar continuity can be seen with Duane O’Connor and his son, Ta’zyah O’Connor. Duane secured the Calypso Monarch title in 2012, and years later, his son followed with a Monarch win of his own in 2023 with Sing Hallelujah.

The Darius family reflects that same pattern of transmission. Tameika Darius is a two-time National Calypso Queen, and her son, Xhaiden Darius, won the Junior Monarch competition at age eight with Calypso Will Survive. Tameika is also the sister of Makeda Darius, who captured the National Calypso Queen title in 2020.

These examples represent only a small part of a wider reality that across the calypso fraternity, many families continue to contribute to the calypso landscape.
