Today, we celebrate the birthday of veteran Trinidadian calypsonian Steve Pascall, known to many in the calypso fraternity as Ras Kommanda.
With more than 40 years of service to the artform, Ras Kommanda has built a respected name as a performer, storyteller, cultural administrator, and leader. His journey reflects the full responsibility of the calypsonian, not only to entertain, but to observe, comment, preserve, organise, and help carry the culture forward.
On stage, Ras Kommanda is known for his witty lyrics, engaging storytelling, and strong performance presence. His catalogue includes songs such as “Reann,” “Doh Call Me No Squatter,” and “Trinidad Culture,” each reflecting his ability to use calypso as a space for humour, commentary, and cultural expression.
One of his notable career highlights came in 2004, when he reached the National Calypso Monarch finals with “Sando Alive,” a popular tribute to San Fernando. The song connected deeply with audiences, especially those who understood the pride, personality, and cultural heartbeat of the southern city.
Ras Kommanda has also shown versatility through blended reggae-calypso work, including “Only a Fool Breaks His Own Heart” with Kerice Pascall, demonstrating his willingness to explore musical styles while staying rooted in Caribbean expression.
But his contribution to calypso extends far beyond performance.
As a long-serving cultural administrator, Ras Kommanda has played an important role in the organisational life of the artform. He served as Chairman of TUCO’s South/Central Zone, managed the popular South/Central Kaiso Showkase tent, and now serves nationally as Vice President of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation.
Happy Birthday Ras Kommanda. Respect, blessings, and continued strength in the culture.
