Veteran calypsonian Lynette “Lady Gypsy” Steele celebrates her birthday today, marking another chapter in a journey that has stretched across more than four decades of Trinidad and Tobago’s calypso tradition.

Known within the fraternity as the “Dragon Lady of Calypso,” Lady Gypsy has built her reputation on a fearless approach to the artform, delivering social commentary, storytelling and performances that speak directly to the issues around her. In 2017, after roughly 40 years in calypso, she reached the National Calypso Monarch Final, joining a historic field in which women made up nine of the 17 finalists.

Her catalogue over the years has included songs such as “No Damn Respect,” “Dangerous World,” “Voice of the Aborted,” “Plight of My People” and “Brand Name.” Her performances have taken her from the calypso tents to the big stage at Skinner Park, where her energetic delivery has repeatedly connected with audiences.

Lady Gypsy’s contribution has also extended beyond her own performances. In 2018, she organised a benefit concert for fellow calypsonian De Fosto, rallying members of the fraternity around an artiste in need.

She is also part of one of Trinidad and Tobago music’s best-known families: the sister of calypsonian Winston “Gypsy” Peters and mother of soca artiste Fay-Ann Lyons.

Today, we celebrate Lady Gypsy for the music, the fire, the longevity and her continued contribution to the culture.

Happy Birthday, Lady Gypsy!
