Dr. Slinger Francisco, universally known as The Mighty Sparrow, has died at the age of 91. His daughter Karen Francisco announced that the legendary calypsonian passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, September 27, following a brief illness in New York.

Born in Grenada on July 9, 1935, and raised in Trinidad, Sparrow became one of the most important figures in the history of calypso. His extraordinary career transformed Caribbean storytelling through music, combining humour, social commentary, politics, romance and unforgettable melodies.

Known around the world as the “Calypso King of the World,” Sparrow built an enormous catalogue that included classics such as Jean and Dinah, Dan Is The Man, Congo Man and Education. His influence extended far beyond Trinidad and Tobago, helping introduce generations of international audiences to calypso and Caribbean culture.

Just last month, TTT reported on preparations for a Carnival 2027 presentation titled To Birdie with Love, celebrating Sparrow's life and legacy. Karen Francisco said at the time that her father's work had impacted “all of the Caribbean, all of the world.”

His voice may now be silent, but the stories, melodies and unmistakable wit of the Birdie remain part of the Caribbean's cultural inheritance.

The Mighty Sparrow 1935–2026.
