TUCO President Ainsley King’s tribute to the Mighty Sparrow was a highlight of the memorial service at NAPA on 16th October 2026, earning a standing ovation as he honoured the cultural giant’s extraordinary career and lasting influence.
Speaking on behalf of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation and the wider calypso fraternity, King delivered a warm, thoughtful address that blended humour, gratitude and pride in the art form Sparrow helped take to the world.
“But Sparrow was always bigger than the trophies,” King declared, capturing the central message of a presentation that celebrated the man behind the music and the possibilities he created for generations of artistes.
King reflected on Sparrow’s command of storytelling, theatre and social commentary, highlighting his ability to capture Caribbean life while connecting with audiences internationally. He also recognised the standards Sparrow established in songwriting, performance and belief in calypso’s worth.
“Calypso could stand proudly on any stage in the world.”
The address drew together the significance of Sparrow’s career and the affection felt for his music. At its close, King invited those gathered to stand in his honour. The audience responded with a standing ovation, warmly receiving King’s tribute while celebrating Sparrow’s enduring legacy.
“And as long as calypso is sung, the name Mighty Sparrow will never be far away.”
